About me from Edmodo

My name is Rene Gochenour. I am currently in my fifth year of teaching business at Omaha Benson High School Magnet. In addition to teaching, I am the FBLA Sponsor and Student Council Co-sponsor. Prior to teaching, I worked in banking and public accounting for 16 years. Spending my day in an effort to enrich the lives of young adults provides me with the joy and positive energy that was missing in my earlier professional life.

As a business teacher, I have had the opportunity to teach a wide variety of classes including: Computer Strategies, Accounting, Advanced Honors Accounting, Economics, and Personal Finance. A diverse student body, supportive staff and administration, make Benson a great environment in which to teach. All of my classes are in computer labs rich in technology. I am able to incorporate technology in my classroom while developing interpersonal relationships with my students.

Teacher Tube

The link I selected from Teacher Tube is an educational video regarding Twitter. I selected Twitter because I always hear about Twitter, but do not know what it is. I can see where it could be very beneficial in the classroom for communication purposes; be it the instructor or group members of a project. It seems very similar to Face Book and the video did not explain benefits that would make it superior to Face Book. For that reason, I would lean toward the application I am most familiar with or my students use the most.

Podcast Subscribtion

The Motley Fool - Podcast and web site (http://www.fool.com/) is a business broadcast once per week for approximately 40 minutes. I choose to subscribe to this Podcast because the source is reputable and the topics are very current events. The program details the how these current events impact the stock market; afterall, I teach my students that everything impacts the ecomony and this Podcast supports that fact.

What I like - the direct implications for the stock market. My Accounting class is currently buying and selling stock on a Virtual Stock Exchange and this Podcast could be a valuable investment tool. Topics are very current - Nuclear crisis in Japan, BP and the oil spill crisis.

What I don't like - I cannot play the entire program to my class. I don't think they would remain engaged for 40 minutes and listen. I need to listen and point out key details. It would be nice to have a short version that hits the high points.
